The Biology of Ito Cells: The Liver’s Vitamin A Vault

When we think of the liver, we think of detoxification and glucose management. But deep within the "Space of Disse" (the narrow gap between the liver's blood vessels and its primary cells) lives a population of star-shaped cells that perform one of the most critical storage tasks in the body: the Ito Cells (also known as Hepatic Stellate Cells).

Ito cells are the primary storage site for Vitamin A (Retinol). In a healthy human, 80% of the body's total Vitamin A is stored inside these cells in the form of large, lipid droplets.
