Ashwagandha and the HPA Axis: Managing Chronic Stress
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has risen to prominence in modern wellness as a potent adaptogen, but its mechanism of action is rooted deeply in the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. This axis is the body's central command system for stress, regulating the release of cortisol, our primary stress hormone.
When we experience chronic stress, the HPA axis can become overactive or dysregulated, leading to "cortisol steal" and a cascade of negative health effects, including anxiety, insomnia, and metabolic issues.
